Mrs. Louise Autio, 88, of Jacobson, died April 27, 1968, at Floodwood. Funeral services were held from the Libbey-Crotteau Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 1, 1968. Rev. Karl Wilkman, officiating. Interment was in Ball Bluff Cemetery.
Clarence Floyd Anderson of Jacobson passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 1972 in the Aitkin Community Hospital at the age of 70, after a long illness. He was the eldest son of Emil and Jessie (Ward) Anderson and moved with them from Blooming Prairie to Jacobson in 1915. He was born in Udolpha Township in Mower County on June 20, 1902. Survivors are one sister (Florence) Mrs. Earl Johnson of Minneapolis; four brothers, Harold and Lawrence of Cloquet and Bernard and Clifford of Jacobson; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Clarence spent most of his life either farming or logging except for time spent in the Army during World War II from July 1942 to April 1943. Services were held at the Jacobson Presbyterian Church on Saturday at 1 p.m. with Rev. James Elvig officiating. Music by Mrs. Chas. Moreill and vocalist was Ray Van Duesen who sang "The Old Rugged Cross", "How Great Thou Art" and "In The Garden". Pallbearers were Wayne Raveill, Maynard Raveill, Walter Jacobson, David Anderson, Lauri Hillstrom and Reuben Niemi. Arrangements were by Johnson's Funeral Home of McGregor. Funeral services for Mrs. Jessie Anderson were held Thursday, May 26, 1960 at 1:30 p.m. from the Jacobson Presbyterian church with Rev. Herbert Peters and Rev. Duane Schendel officiating. Vocal numbers were by Mrs. Kathleen Duncan, with Miss Janet Duncan as accompanist. Pallbearers were Jesse Simons, Harry Duncan, Lee Feero, Ed Wells, Dick Wiggins and Fred Johnson. Interment was in Ball Bluff Cemetery. Mrs. Anderson had been in failing health since Christmas and passed away at the Gables Rest Home, Aitkin, Minnesota May 22, 1960, having been admitted there six days previous. She was born in Mower county, Minnesota, September 30, 1883, and was married to Emil Anderson September 17, 1901. They lived in the southern part of the state until 1915, when they moved to the Jacobson area, Aitkin county. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Earl (Erle) Johnson (Florence), of Minneapolis; six sons, Clarence, Bernard and Clifford of Jacobson; Arlie of Superior, Wisconsin, Harold and Lawrence of Cloquet; four brothers, Floyd and Lawrence Ward of Jacobson, Claude Ward of Grand Rapids and George Ward of Cloquet; two sisters, Mrs. Gust Lundquist (Olive) and Mrs. Orlie Thompson, both of Jacobson; 13 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Those from a distance attending the services were from Duluth, Nisswa, Aitkin, Palisade, Marble, Minneapolis and Grand Rapids. Funeral arrangements were with the Johnson Funeral Home at McGregor. Richard Alan Anderson, 37, Aitkin, died Dec. 23, 2002, on Farm Island Lake, Aitkin County. He was born March 13, 1965, in Minneapolis, the son of Richard and Jacqueline (Nesheim) Anderson. He attended schools in St. Louis Park. He married Jeanne Marie Brenden on April 20, 1985, at Excelsior. He was self-employed and owner of Quality Construction Connection, Inc. He moved to Aitkin from the Twin Cities in 1995 and continued to work in the Cities until September 2002 when he permanently moved his business to Aitkin. He was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling and the outdoors. He was a good and loyal friend. He was blessed with a loving extended family and many wonderful friends. He will be missed greatly. Services were held Dec. 28 at Aitkin's Westside Church with Rev. Dallas Smith officiating. Special music was provided by Bryan Johnson, Becky Klingelhofer, Steve and Joanna Olson and Donna Hensel and sons. Burial was in the Bennettville Cemetery in Aitkin County. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, Aitkin; son, Robert; daughters, Michelle and Crystal, all of Aitkin; parents, Richard and Jacqueline Anderson, Laughlin, Nev.; sister, Penny Anderson, California; grandparents, Harold and Muriel Nesheim, St. Louis Park; aunt and uncle, Jan and Jack Martyn, Crystal; brother-in-law, Scott Hill; sister-in-law, Jackie Hill; and nephews, Ryan, Bo and Troy. Arrangements were with the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin.
Alfreda Gunborg Anderson, 97, Cosby, died Nov. 1, 2002, at the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby. She was born March 21, 1905, in Deerwood, the daughter of John and Gunborg (Torson) Anderson. She was a retired bookkeeper for the city of Duluth with 30 years of service. She is a charter member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Aitkin. Services were held Nov. 5, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Aitkin with Rev. Gunnar Salmonson officiating. Burial was in the Deerwwd Scandia Cemetery in Deerwood Township. She is survived by her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Thor and Anders K. Anderson; and sister, Christine Novotny. Arrangements were with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.
Margaret L. Anderson, 84, McGregor, died Nov. 27, 2002, at Riverwood Healthcare Center, Aitkin. She was born Dec. 11, 1917, in Randolph, Iowa, to Luther and Cora (Goodner) Thomas. They moved to Missouri and then back to Iowa. She married Herman Culbert on Dec. 28, 1944. He died in 1953 and she married Kenneth Paulson on July 20, 1955. He died in 1970. She married Iral Anderson on Dec. 15, 197 (sic). He died in 1992. She was an active volunteer for Senior Companions, the McGregor Area Clothing Closet and the McGregor Food Shelf. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and a board member of the McGregor Area AARP. She lived in the McGregor area since 1980. Funeral services were Nov. 30 at the Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Dan Heath officiating. Pallbearers were Denise Narveson, Sean Narveson, Jason Narveson, Loren Narveson, Tracy Lewis, Joe Culbert. Bill Fox was soloist and Jeanne Thompson the organist. Burial was Dec. 2 in the Garden View Cemetery in Waterloo, Iowa. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law: John and Beverly Culbert, Waterloo, Iowa, and Lou and Lyn Culbert, Minneapolis; daughters and sons-in-law: Linda and Gary Narveson, McGregor, and Kathy and David Carpenter, Waterloo, Iowa; stepson and wife, Terry and Ruth Anderson, Buena Park, Calif.; stepdaughters and husbands; Pat and Jerry Uting, Waterloo, Iowa, and Sally Stickfort, Arizona; 46 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands; two brothers; sons, Martin Herman and Paul; stepdaughters, Joan and Betty; and three great-grandchildren.
Virginia "Ginny" Albro, 74, McGregor, died January 17, 2003, at the Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin. She was born October 15, 1928, in St. Paul, the daughter of Walter and Josephine (O'Connell) Lee. She grew up in Fridley and attended schools in Columbia Heights and graduated from Columbia Heights High School in 1947. She married D.M. "Dewey" Albro on October 1, 1949 at Columbia Heights. They lived in Columbia Heights until 1965 when they moved to Anoka. They retired to Lake Minnewawa near McGregor in 1985. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in McGregor, the Savanna Golf Club, the Birthday Club and the Graduating Class Club. She enjoyed gardening, snowmobiling and pontoon boat rides. Services weill be held Friday, January 24, at noon at the Holy Family Catholic Church in McGregor with Father John Fleischhacker officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Anoka at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. She is survived by her husband, D.M. "Dewey" Albro, McGregor; son and daughter-in-law Steve and Karen Albro, St. Francis; daughters and sons-in-law; Nanette and Steve Denk, Burnsville, and Sherry and Mike Johnson, Andover; grandchildren; Josh, Jessica, Kelli, Tony and Dana; brothers, Robert Lee, Chisago City, and David Lee, Lyons, Colorado; and sister-in-law, Val Lee, Columbia Heights. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Thomas, in 1966; and brother, Richard. Arrangements were with the McGregor Funeral Home in McGregor.
Gerald D. Allen, 75, Fleming community, died Nov. 10, 2002, at the Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin. He was born July 13, 1927, in Fonda, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Grace (McClurg) Allen. He attended schools in Fonda, and graduated from high school in Ft. Dodge, Iowa and attended Drake University. He later attended barber schools and opened a barber and beauty shop in St. Louis Park. He served with the United States Navy in World War II. He married Carol Ann Bulock on April 4, 1979, in Minneapolis. He was a member of the Aitkin and St. Louis Park VFW Posts and the Aitkin and St. Louis Park American Legion Posts. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and a great grandfather.He enjoyed the outdoors and did painting as a hobby. Services were held Nov. 14 at the McGregor Funeral Home with Kenneth Fairbanks officiating. Jo Schneider played the organ and Steve Olson sang. Pallbearers were Darrel Piispanen, Darry Burr, Keith Verthein, Lonny Bulock, Glen Bulock and Duane Ganz. Honorary pallbearers were John Berndt, Daniel Allen, Robert Anderson and Bud Erickson. Burial was in the Ft. Snelling Cemetery in Minneapolis with military rites by the Fr. Snelling Memorial Rifle Squad. He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann; son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Kate Allen, St. Paul; daughter and son-in-law, Vetnita and Robert Anderson, St. Paul; granddaughter, Isabella Anderson; grandson, Luke Anderson; and his faithful dog, Wolf. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Allen. Arrangements were with the McGregor Funeral Home in McGregor.
Aune E. Ahonen, 94, Jacobson, died Friday, December 20, 2002, at the Leisure Hills Care Center, Grand Rapids. She was born November 7, 1908, to Jacob and Elina (Bottila) Huhta in Beaver Township in Aitkin County where she grew up and attended school. On July 12, 1927, she was married to Julius F. Ahonen in Beaver Township and in 1937, they made their home in Jacobson. She is survived by two daughters, Alyce Leona Peterson, Grand Rapids, and Lorraine (Al) Rhohde, Gold Creek, California; one son, Kenneth (Lezley) Ahonen, Jacobson, one brother, Arvid (Marlys) Huhta, McGregor; seven grandchildren, Michael (Peg) Richards, Stacey (Jack) Kingsley, Gunnar (Dawn) Ahonen, Kenni (David) Berg, Amber Ahonen, Jacob (Jessie) Ahonen and Joshua (Sara) Ahonen, nine great-grandchildren, Heather (Eric) Johnston, Michael Richards, Jr., Tristan (Jessie) Kingsley and Johnny Kingsley; Levi and Georgia Berg, Luke, Chase and Hunter Ahonen; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband, Julius, in 1977, her parents; three sisters and three brothers. Services: Monday, December 23, at 3 p.m. at Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, with the Rev. Harold W. Anderson, 81, Aitkin, formerly of Beaver Township, Aitkin County, died on March 10, 2003, at Riverwood Extended Care in Aitkin. He was born June 3, 1921, in Beaver Township, Aitkin County, the son of Abraham and Suzanna Anderson. He grew up and attended schools in Beaver Township and McGregor. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps camp at East Lake for a time. He married Lillian M. Lundquist on May 2, 1942, in Beaver Township. He worked in a logging camp at Isabella for a time and then lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for a few years. He moved back to Beaver Township in 1949 and lived there until going into Riverwood Extended Care three years ago. He worked as a salesman for many years. Funeral services were March 15 at the Beaver Finnish Lutheran Church in Beaver Township with the Rev. Clarence Lundquist officiating. Music was provided by the Rev. Clarence and Sandy Lundquist. Burial was in Beaver Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons: Stephen Pratt, Scott Sikkink, Mitchell Anderson, Brian Malmquist, Matthew Anderson, Mark Anderson, Josh Anderson, Jeremiah Anderson, Andrew Anderson and Nathan Anderson. He is survived by his wife, Lillian, Aitkin; children and spouses; Sandra and James Pratt, Grand Rapids; David and Yvonne Anderson, Sturgion Lake; Tim and Penny Anderson, Sandstone; Mary Ellen and Fred Grossman, Grand Rapids; Peter Anderson, Grantsburg, Wisconsin, John Anderson and wife, Lori Fleischhacker, Brainerd; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers. Arrangements were with Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home.
Frances Augusta Ackerman, 92, Aitkin, formerly of Abereen, South Dakota, died on March 8, 2003, at Riverwood Extended Care in Aitkin. She was born December 12, 1910, at Fort Pierre, Sout Dakota to Fred and August (Goltz) Kramer. The family moved and lived on a number of farms on the North Dakota/South Dakota border near Havana, North Dakota. She went to school and graduated from Havana. She attended business college in Aberdeen, South Dakota, studied law and worked as a legal secretary. She married Russell R. Abersoll on September 19, 1931, in Aberdeen. Her husband died of cancer on September 25, 1943. In 1949, she married Frank J. Ackerman. He died on March 31, 1989, from a stroke. She moved to Aitkin in 1996 and lived at Maryhill Manor until moving to Riverwood Extended Care in September 2000. She was a member of the Christian Temperance Union, Royal Neighbor Fraternity and Faith United Methodist Church, Aberdeen, and active in the UMW. Funeral services were March 17 at Faith United Methodist Church in Aberdeen with Pastor John Baskins officiating. The organist was Donna Seaton and singing were Frances' granddaughters. The pallbearers were her grandchildren: Mark Abersoll, Cherie Coutue, Tara Hallberg, Tate Abersoll, Jeremy Ackerman and Brea Ackerman. Burial was at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law; Russell and Ivy Abersoll, Aitkin; Ronald and Gill Abersoll, Duncan, Oklahoma, and Patrick and Gaye Ackerman, Helena, Montana; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Arrangements were with Willim Northland Funeral Home, Aitkin.
Killed in Action WWII To the Journal of Aitkin County heroes who have made the supreme sacrifice in order that we might enjoy our American way of life without interference from tyrants, must be added another name – that of Pvt. Robert (Bob) G. Anderson, United States Marine, killed in action in the south Pacific January 15th. Robert is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Anderson of Tamarack and enlisted in the Marines in April 1942. He received his basic training at San Diego, Calif., and left for foreign duty on October 18, 1942 and was reported as having arrived safely at his destination in November. Robert lacked but five days of being 23 years old when killed in action January 15th. He was born at Minneapolis, January 20, 1920 and came to Tamarack with his parents in 1928. Here he grew to manhood developing a friendly happy and pleasing personality which won him scores of friends and respect of the entire community. He leaves to mourn his untimely death, besides his mother and father, two sisters and a brother; Doris and Burton of Tamarack and Mrs. John Laucamp of Wilton Junction, Iowa. Also mourning are his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Anderson of Minneapolis and a host of other relatives and close friends. Robert G. Anderson is buried at Plot C Row 1 Grave 385 Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii and was awarded the Purple Heart. Contributed by Laura Soleta
